From confinement to the open areas of the Sanctuary

Chimpanzee Bruna was born in 1988 and arrived at the Great Apes Sanctuary of Sorocaba, São Paulo, Brazil, in 2004.  She is one among many other chimpanzees who suffered a lot in circuses.

She lived in Circus Garcia for 15 years confined in a small cage. At the moment of her rescue, it was necessary to saw her cage to take her out, because her size was bigger than the door – yes, she grew up inside the cage for years, without going out.

For this reason she suffers from claustrophobia to this day,  for having lived in an extremely small place. No matter it is raining or the sun is shining, she prefers to stay in the open-air enclosure, especially in the baskets at the top of the houses, where she makes her nest to sleep peacefully.  Despite this trauma, she is calm, gentle and docile, and lives in peace with her brother Carioca.

She arrived at the Sanctuary in 2004. She lived at Circo Garcia for 15 years confined in a small cage. When we rescued her from the circus, we had to saw her cage so that Bruna could be removed from her own cage, as her size prevented her from getting out. From a very young age, Bruna was kept in that same cage and as she developed without ever leaving, at the time of rescue she was bigger than the cage door.
