The organizations Mighty Earth and Satya Bumi released a Red Alert report on the Tapanuli orangutan at the end of October. The report “Code Red for the Tapanuli Orangutan” highlights the risk that the species could disappear and calls for urgent collective action. It is estimated that only 658 individuals remain in the wild today.
Defying conflict to track the world’s rarest chimpanzees
Gashaka Gumti National Park, in Nigeria, is one of the only areas where the Nigeria–Cameroon chimpanzee lives, a rare subspecies. The site hosted a key research center whose work was interrupted in the 2010s due to conflict issues. But its activities have resumed and researchers and local residents celebrate good news from the field.
Results from a study conducted by the Max Planck Institute of Animal Behavior suggest that chimpanzee culture includes many everyday behaviors essential to their survival. Dozens of previously overlooked cultural behaviors were identified in wild chimpanzees, demonstrating that their culture extends far beyond what was previously recognized.
Children and Monkeys Share a Common Understanding of Geometry
A new study from Carnegie Mellon University (USA), published in July in the journal PNAS, presents the first evidence that baboons and rhesus macaques share geometric intuitions found in young children and some adults with less formal education. It is a rather abstract form of cognition, which we share with other primates.

Article by one of the creators of EVApe Cognition, a standardized database comprising 18 years of experiments, decisions, and relationships of great apes. It is a tool designed to support long-term studies of behavior and to enable a deeper understanding of the complexity of their social lives.
Yoko and His Hat: Environmental Enrichment, Stimulation, and Well-Being
Yoko was transferred from Colombia to the Great Apes Sanctuary of Sorocaba a year and a half ago. Over the past few weeks, he has shown interest in using a hat—an object offered as part of his environmental enrichment program.
He arrived at the Sanctuary after an unprecedented operation involving several organizations that mobilized to make his transfer possible. Yoko was the last remaining captive chimpanzee in Colombia.
In populations under human care, studies indicate that chimpanzees have an average life expectancy of approximately 35–40 years. However, some individuals may live past 50 or 60 years, as it is the case with Margarete.
During her childhood, she worked in a circus and had all her teeth pulled out. Later, she was taken to a commercial chimpanzee breeding facility, where she was used as a "breeder".
