Chimpanzee Jeber was castrated and had all his teeth removed at the circus where he lived. At the Great Apes Sanctuary in Sorocaba, he gradually adapted and regularly enjoys environmental enrichment activities. Watch here!
Since he has no teeth, Jeber developed unusual strategies for certain things. For example, he opens coconuts by hitting them against a surface or using his foot. To eat the coconut pulp and carrots, he uses his fingers to break off pieces, since he cannot bite.
The video shows some moments of Jeber demonstrating his skills and reacting to environmental enrichment stimuli, such as digging toys out of a box filled with sand.
A LITTLE BIT OF HIS STORY
Jeber is 35 years old and arrived at the Sanctuary in 2008, along with his companion Tyson. The transfer took place when Ibama confiscated all the animals from Circus Le Cirque, in Brasília.
At the time, Jeber and Tyson were living in a precarious and extremely small trailer, surrounded by feces and food scraps. When he was rescued, he had a heavy chain around his neck, which left scars.
Because of all these traumas, he is somewhat distrustful and unpredictable with people. But over the years, he has calmed down and revealed himself to be a sociable, playful chimpanzee, fully adapted to the Sanctuary life.
