PRE-ANNOUNCED TRAGEDY Maybe Alemão had the desire to alert, with his death, all who did not allow him to have a life with his equals at GAP sanctuary. Those who used him for 15 years in a 15 square-meters island in Americana Zoo. Those who blocked his transference to the sanctuary two years ago, in a clear alliance of circus men and zoos, will pay for this crime too someday. The ones who in the last few days refused to deliver him to us, in order to save him, and preferred to let him die with no mercy will pay for this too.
Alemão died because human vanity is stronger than any other feelings. And everyone, from Mayors to Politicians and zoo people, who used Alemão for their promotion and to human entertainment, does not mind this tragedy. But we care and will denounce them wherever they are in the country and whatever position they assume, because they do not deserve any consideration.
Alemão will be the symbol of our fight to take all the chimpanzees who still remain in zoos and can get crazy due to the public exhibition. Alemão did not die for no purpose. The tragedy we had announced two years before happened. He did not want to live anymore, for his life had no means at all. His illness was not physical or physiological, no matter the technical reports published. He died of sadness, abandonment and disgust, like many others before him who did not have the chance to go to a sanctuary to live with their equals.
World and Brazilian society must know what zoos do with our brothers’ primates. They explore, mock and submit them to the harassment of an ignorant audience, without any compassion for these beings with whom we shared, millions of years ago, evolution and that have become our slaves.
May Alemão rest in Peace!
“ALEMÃO’S BODY MUST BE BURIED WITH HIS EQUALS” We are asking officially IBAMA, the institution responsible for the destination of the body, to give us Alemão so that he can be buried with their equals at GAPProjectCemetery in Sorocaba.
A few years ago, Chuca, a female chimpanzee who was killed on the street at São Bernardo do Campo by a poor prepared police officer, was buried at Sorocaba Sanctuary, with formal permission of IBAMA, which gave us her body. The minimum that the Government can do now for a being who had been so hurt all his life is provide him with a decent funeral, at the place he wished he was, which did not happen because of some unconscious humans.

What plunged these chimps into civil war? A new study traces the breakdown
Specialists who have been studying the behavior of a group of chimpanzees in the wild in Uganda for 30 years published a groundbreaking study in the journal Science this week. The work reveals details about how and why internal violence sometimes turns into a kind of broader civil war.
A chimp’s instrumental performances help us understanding the evolution of musicality
Researchers of great apes' behavior already knew that chimpanzees exhibit instrumental behaviors and are particularly skilled at drumming rhythms. But experts from Kyoto University have identified that 26‑year‑old chimp Ayumu combined percussion with vocalization.
Yesterday was a profoundly sad day for the world of conservation, for the defense of great apes, and for all those who believe in a more just and compassionate humanity. Biruté Galdikas has passed away. She was one of the most important figures in the protection of orangutans in the wild.
Like humans, chimpanzees are fascinated by crystals
Recent study published in Frontiers in Psychology shows that, beyond identifying crystals, the chimps clearly expressed interest in handling and comparing them. The goal is to understand why humans ancestrally are fascinated by crystals, by comparison with the chimpanzees' behaviors.
