Tota was born in a zoo in Lisbon and was later transferred to a Brazilian zoo, where she lived with a group of three individuals.

She arrived at Anami in 2010 and was the oldest chimpanzee at the Institute. She lived her last years with Carol, Caíque and Leila, with whom she had an intense maternal relationship.

Tota did not look her age. She was very active during the day and quite methodical with her schedule, especially at mealtimes. Every day she would build her nest to rest and loved the fruit treats that were offered in the late afternoon. She always vocalized in gratitude.

She passed away in April 2025.
