Bicco was born in the forests of Africa. Captured as a baby, he was sold to a dealer in Lebanon, where he lived inside a pet shop, being forced to take photographs with the store’s customers.
After turning four years old, the owners of the establishment could no longer keep him because he had become very strong and had his own will. He was transferred to a poorly structured zoo located in Beirut and spent six more years without the company of another chimpanzee, being tortured and mistreated.
He arrived at Anami in 2012 with deep psychological scars resulting from a life of torture and frustration. He mutilated himself every day. But within the first year at the sanctuary, Bicco showed extraordinary recovery, lost his fear of humans, and began to display typical species behaviors.
After two years of treatment, he no longer mutilated himself and spent his time playing and communicating with the neighboring chimpanzees. Unfortunately, in 2017, Bicco passed away due to myocardial fibrosis, leaving a void in everyone who lived with him.
