Another young chimpanzee dies in Brazil
posted in 05 Oct 2011

Jimmy was the son of Maria and Billy. Maria lived at Bauru zoo, but belonged to Brasília zoo. Billy also lived at Bauru, but belonged to Porto Alegre zoo. Jimmy was bought by dog trainer Gilberto Miranda from Bauru zoo, where he was born.

Jimmy died alone a few months ago in the facilities owned by the trainer and only now the information was confirmed. He was about 10 years old. His mother and father also died. The extermination of great apes in Brazilian zoos continues faster.

Jimmy’s brother and sister – Carol and Billy – are with us in Sorocaba GAP Sanctuary. They were saved from early death by Dr. Cléa Lúcia Magalhães, but Jimmy was not that lucky.

Jimmy was used with commercial purposes in advertisement, TV shows and other kind of events, until Ibama (Brazilian Environment Institute) finally prohibited his use in these activities.

He lived alone for more than 10 years in a tiny enclosure at ZOONIT, in Niterói. Jimmy arrived at the sanctuary in 2011, after an arrest made by IBAMA for the removal of all animals due to the conditions of mistreatment the animals were being subjected to at the zoo.
Date of birth: 1992
